Houston Youth Lacrosse Dedicates Flagpoles to Mark Rothwell and Mark Soper
Houston, TX - HYLAX held it's first annual end-of-season picnic on Wednesday, May 11, honoring two special leaders who are retiring. They dedicated the HYLAX flagpole to Mark Soper and the Texas flagpole to Mark Rothwell in appreciation for the contributions they have made to HYLAX.

Athletics: Sports Association goes green
Energized by the generous donation of more than 300 small trees from Trees for Houston, families from the five South Campus sports leagues that practice and play on the South Campus Sports Association grounds, worked together one weekend morning in December to plant the trees.

South campus considers its emergency preparedness
South Campus sports complex does not have an automated portable defibrillator on site, but officials are looking into how to have emergency equipment accessible when the fields are in use. The need to do so became apparent earlier this month when a parent had a heart attack on the sidelines of a soccer game at the complex.

South Campus sports complex makeover continues
The South Campus sports complex has had a complete makeover done on its property, and more improvements will continue through the end of the year. While plans for the fields were scaled back from the initial plan, the outcome is just what the South Campus had hoped for and wanted - more fields and better facilities.

When seconds counted, community responded
Recovering Monday in a local hospital, a patient who was revived on the sidelines of the South Campus Sports Complex soccer fields Sunday recalls little of the heart attack and subsequent medical intervention on the scene that saved his life. He does know, though, that he is "blessed in how this turned out."

Local soccer clubs could have new place to call home
Along with a potential new stadium for the MLS-champion Houston Dynamo, the city signed letters of intent last month for two locations that would serve as a regional amateur soccer complex. The proposal would entail an 18-field facility that would house the Dynamo's practice fields as well as green space for local youth and recreational leagues in locations near Sims Bayou and Almeda-Genoa in south Houston.

South Campus closer to reality
The SCSA, a grouping of five youth sports organizations, purchased 55 acres at the corner of West Belfort and Stella Link from the Stella Link Redevelopment Association in 2002 for the purpose of providing more space for youth sports.

South Campus Sports Association receives grant for field improvements
The grant, awarded by the Houston Texans, National Football League, NFL Players Association and Local Initiatives Support Corporation, is part of $2.4 million in field refurbishment awards allocated this year to community groups in 20 cities nationwide. Since 1999, $550,000 in NFL Grassroots grants has been applied to community fields in the Houston area.

The South Campus Sports Association will utilize a $200,000 grant from the National Football League Grassroots field grant program to install a synthetic turf at the South Campus Sports Complex. South Campus Sports picks West U woman as director
As new executive director of the nonprofit South Campus Sports Association, Martha Greene will be responsible for almost everything that goes on in its daily activities. That includes scheduling the fields for the organizations that use them (Southwest Football League, Houston Youth Lacrosse Organization, West University Little League, West University Softball Association and West University Soccer Club), volunteer management, organizing special events, marketing and public relations.

Steady growth nets new respect for lacrosse
Lacrosse has been described as a combination of many sports. Using netted sticks to put a small rubber ball in a net draw initial comparisons to hockey. However, the footwork and dexterity needed in basketball along with physical play reminiscent of football are all aspects of lacrosse.

Youth sports group starts $10 million effort
A coalition of youth sports organizations serving thousands of Houston-area youngsters is kicking off an ambitious $10 million fundraising campaign to build more sports fields. The South Campus Sports Association is an alliance that includes West University Little League, West University Soccer Club, Southwest Football League, West University Softball Association, Houston Lacrosse, the Braes Bayou Little League and the West University Sports Tri-Sports Association.

Merger, purchase of park will benefit Little League kids
This weekend, Braes Bayou and West University Little Leagues will vote to merge, as approved in October by Little League International, Inc., the governing body of Little League Baseball. The vote will deal with the merger of the two legal entities.

WULL board OKs McGovern purchase
The West U Little League board of directors has tentatively approved the acquisition of youth sports fields at the McGovern Campus and its merger with Braes Bayou Little League, league President Robert McLamb said Monday. Both moves are subject to the review of final documents.

Area's Little Leagues merging
Early last week, the merger of the West U and Braes Bayou little leagues was approved, it has been confirmed by Little League International, the groups governing body. According to some sources close to the merger, an affirmative vote of the new leagues membership is still required to ratify the move.

Girls softball opens in style
The West University Place softball season started off with a bang over the weekend, as players, coaches and spectators celebrated with an opening-day parade and festivities. This was the first year for an opening-day celebration, which West University Softball Association organizers expect to be an annual event.

TriSports in "crisis situation"
Due to area school rebuilding and renovation projects, the TriSports organization is facing a playing field crisis in the coming sports seasons. The heavily-debated extension of West Bellfort through the Stella Link South Campus sports complex has ended with the Houston Planning Commission voting to keep it on the Major Thoroughfare and Freeway Plan, but moving its alignment. Its not everything we wanted, but it puts us in a better position then we were, says Mark Lowes, president of the South Campus Sports Association.

The controversial extension of West Bellfort through a 55-acre private park that serves 4,500 young athletes has been settled, said the president of the South Campus Sports Association. The West Bellfort project faced strong opposition from parents of young athletes who play softball, baseball, soccer, lacrosse and football at the South Campus park.

The Houston Planning Commission has delayed, until tomorrow, its decision to remove or proceed with extending West Bellfort through the Stella Link South Campus sports complex for a second time. Local school construction projects to unfold in earnest
Three area Houston Independent School District schools are scheduled for replacement or renovation within the next few years, each a beneficiary of the Rebuild 2002 bond program approved by voters in November 2002. Mark Twain Elementary and Pershing middle schools will each be replaced by a new facility on its existing campus.

West U. league continuing to attract interest
Stephen Keener, worldwide president and CEO of Little League Baseball International, traveled from Williamsport, Pa., to attend WULL's opening ceremonies and carnival held on March 8. While many area leagues have declined because of the emergence of soccer and other factors, WULL has held strong with 892 boys and girls suiting up this spring.
